About This Tool

Move.ai democratizes motion capture (“mocap”). Traditionally, recording 3D movement for games or movies required expensive studios and velcro suits with ping-pong balls. Move.ai replaces all hardware with software, using AI to extract skeletal data from 2D video footage captured on iPhones or GoPros.

How to Use

  1. 1. Download the Move app on one or more iPhones.
  2. 2. Sync the devices and position them around your actor.
  3. 3. Record the action (jumping, dancing, fighting).
  4. 4. Upload footage to the cloud where AI extracts 3D data.
  5. 5. Download the FBX or USD file to use in Blender, Unreal Engine, or Maya.

Move One

Their latest product, “Move One,” allows for single-camera capture using just one iPhone. While multi-camera setups provide the highest fidelity (avoiding occlusion), Move One uses advanced generative AI to infer depth and hidden limbs from a single angle.

Fingers & Props

Unlike basic pose estimation models, Move.ai is capable of tracking finger movements (essential for expressive acting) and interacting with large props. The AI understands biomechanics, ensuring knees and elbows bend realistically without “popping.”

Limitations

It requires a clean environment with good lighting and distinct clothing (no loose fabrics that hide body shape). While incredible for markerless tech, it may still require some manual cleanup in animation software for “AAA” production quality.

Export Pipeline

The platform is designed to fit into professional pipelines. It exports standard .FBX and .USD files that can be dragged and dropped directly onto a “MetaHuman” in Unreal Engine or a rig in Unity, automating the “retargeting” process.
